GIANT TANKER DESIGN FOR ROTTERDAM
A 425,000 dwt shallow draft VLCC tanker design was made for the Port of Rotterdam. The design draft is 72 feet. This figure was arrived at after economic analysis of dredging Rotterdam harbour revealed a 90 ft. draft would cost 10 times more than a 72 ft. draft. In addition the model tests showed that maneuvering characteristics would not require alterations to the approach channel or outer harbour. An unexpected bonus of a 10% power saving was discovered during tank testing. The total economic picture makes this size vessel attractive for this service. Sizes from 110,000 dwt to 840,000 dwt were included in the study, as were methods of trans-shipment at sea and distribution through a central terminal. The ship was also related to the oil company's total supply and refining economics. The summary economics are not broken down to show the assumed capital costs.
