THE LUF SYSTEM OF UNLOADING ROLL-ON/ROLL-OFF VESSELS ADOPTED BY GOTHENBURG PORT
The Swedish port of Gothenburg, in co-operation with the Gothenburg Stevedoring Co., has reviewed the provision of a large port installation for handling unit and pallet cargoes, and a project group formed by these two bodies has recommended that all dry-cargo handling should be concentrated within the area of the Skandia harbour, which is ten years old, and the adjacent Alvsborg harbour, which is still under construction. The project group is at present compiling a more detailed plan. The article gives further information on this project, and mentions that this form of co-operation could be used as a model for ailing river-ports elsewhere. The project group estimate that the scheme will be realised by the early 1980s. It will not affect direct container traffic. Transportation within the dock area will be handled by the LUF (Lift Unit Frame) loading and unloading system. The article gives some further infomation on the LUF system in general and in its application at the Gothenburg project. It is mentioned that special frames for the LUF system can accommodate six 20-ft containers or equivalent (the standard frames take four TEUs), that the towing unit can be a fork-lift truck or other vehicle and not necessarily a specially-designed unit, and that the system can be used in conjunction with conveyors to load bulk cargoes from the ship into unspecified type).
