WHO NEEDS TRANSPORTATION?

This paper discusses past research and its limitations and outlines a method for identifying the mobility handicapped segments of the population. The household trip making data from the Lansing Kalamazoo O-D studies are factor analyzed in order to reduce the original "n" variables (socioeconomic characteristics) to some smaller number of factors. The newly discovered factors are interpreted, factor scores are computed for the newly discovered factors, and the factors then are used as the independent variables in a multiple regression analysis. The dependent variables in the regression analysis is household trip making. Factor analysis and multiple regression analysis are detailed and the study findings are discussed. Recommendations for the improvement of transportation research and planning are presented.
