A STUDY ON THE STRENGTH OF DOUBLE-HULL STRUCTURES IN COLLISION (PART-FRACTURE MECHANISM IN STATIC FAILURE TEST)
An account is given of an experimental examination of the feasibility of a collision-protection method in which square panels are placed between the hull plating and an inner shell. The experiments were carried out on double-hull models penetrated statically by a rigid bow model, so that a reasonable estimate could be made of the amount of energy absorbed in the hull plating. In load/penetration curves of the results, two typical humps are seen; the first is due mainly to the membrane force in the hull plating, and the second to the ultimate strength of the vertical girders. These humps have an important influence on the capacity for energy absorption in a collision. In addition to the load/penetration curves, the article includes absorbed-energy/penetration and other curves of the results, together with moire pattern photographs of the outer plating. It was found that considerable energy was absorbed by the hull plating in a minor collision.
