NEW INTEGRATED NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEM: DATABRIDGE

DATABRIDGE, a most attractive navigational aid for deck officers, is a system that guarantees improved safety with less operational cost. The system consists of the following subsystems: DATARADAR, an anticollision system; DATAPILOT, an adaptive autopilot; DATASAILING, a route calculation system; and DATAPOSITION, an automatic position estimating system. Under a technical license agreement concluded in 1972, NORATOM NORCONTROL A/S and IHI have delivered more than 150 DATABRIDGE systems to almost all of the leading ship owners in the world. To achieve higher reliability of the system with lower cost by curtaining hardware as much as possible, the system was reexamined with regard to both hardware and software at the development stage of the improved DATABRIDGE (DB-4). A recognized ergonomic principle was applied to the display method as well as the arrangement of control knobs and switches. Moreover, the system has been designed to have higher flexibility as well as extended performance so that future expansion of the function can be attained easily.
