SERVICE REQUIREMENTS FOR MODERN CABLES

This paper describes the basic performance requirements for the main classes of industrial cables. Since cables were first manufactured about 100 years ago, many materials have been employed to cover the conductors. Among these are rubbers and, more recently, rubberlike thermoplastics. The considerably greater versatility of modern polymers has dramatically changed ideas on cable design and performance, certainly over the past 40 years. There are a number of requirements which have emerged with the growth of the use of electricity. These vary from industry to industry. This paper covers mining and quarrying; shipbuilding; transport; the oil industry; power distribution; domestic appliances and handtools. Specifications for widely divergent requirements for polymeric cables are reviewed.
