The Philadelphia Gear Corp., King of Prussia, Pa. under contract to the Bell Aerospace Div. of Textron, is currently manufacturing special controllable pitch propellers that will propel the U.S. Government Surface Effect Ships Program Office's 100-t, SES-100B Surface Effect Ship to speeds calculated to be in excess of 80 knots. To permit fine control of the high performance SES-100B it was necessary to design structurally adequate hubs and hub mechanisms in limited space and to develop high accuracy blade pitch servo systems capable of resolving blade pitch angles to a small fraction of a degree under high centrifugal loading and blade water entry. It was necessary also to evaluate and choose materials exhibiting both high strength and high resistance to cavitation damage.
