PREDICTION OF SLOSH LOADS UNDER REALISTIC RANDOM SHIP MOTIONS
When considering tank design in relation to sloshing, both ship-operator and designer will aim at keeping the sloshing-induced loads at a low level. The designer will, in addition, require information about the individual maxima of loads so that he can design against distortion and, in order to design against fatigue, information on cumulative loading, which in turn leads to a requirement for predicting the probability distributions of these loads. The Author, of Det Norske Veritas, discusses these requirements, and associated problems and their solution, under the headings: (i) Means to Avoid Excessive Sloshing. (ii) Load Estimates Based on Deterministic Approach. (iii) Probabilistic Approaches for Estimating Slosh Loads (Restrictions, assumption, and possibilities--Predictions based on linear superposition; short term response (specific sea state); long term distribution of response--Predictions based on time-domain simulation of sloshing; short term response; long term response).
