A DRIVE-BY-WIRE VEHICLE CONTROL SYSTEM FOR SEVERELY DISABLED DRIVERS
The paper discusses the development of an automated drive-by-wire system for disabled drivers, developed at TRRL. The system uses no mechanical links between a driver and a vehicle's controls but only electrical connections. It is based on the principle of a driver operating a knob or joystick to generate an electrical signal which demands a required control action using electrically-controlled servo systems for steering, throttle and brakes. The paper describes the installation of the system in a number of vehicles and the results of trials carried out. /TRRL/
