NEW CHAIN/WIRE MOORING SYSTEMS MEET CHALLENGE OF ULTRADEEP WATER
The use of combination chain/wire mooring systems, along with advanced anchor line handling equipment, has greatly extended the water depth capabilities of floating rigs. The author shows how modern mooring concepts can increase deepwater capabilities even more to meet a growing need of the offshore oil and mining industries. The combination system of chain adjacent to the anchor and wire rope fixed to the winch drum of the rig can allow drilling in water depths below 1000 m, and in areas with rough weather conditions. Several such systems are described.
