MARINE LOADING ARMS. STRESS LIMITATION AND TWO PHASE FLOW

In the past 10 years increasing use has been made of fully balanced all metal loading arms at tanker marine terminal installations. Parallel explosion in tanker size brought into the focus the necessity of subjecting the general design of loading arms to a comprehensive stress analysis that is developed in paper and that considers also vibrations since the effect of two phase flow upon fully balanced all metal loading arms is to cause low frequency vibration or stress reversal upon a structure already carrying a high mean stress, and thus to produce fatigue failure.
