COMPOSITE DECK SYSTEMS FOR MARINE STRUCTURES

Concrete is used for durability and increased facility life of marine structures. Forming and labor for deck systems above water are a major part of marine construction costs. This article reviews some special details of composite deck systems (CDS) for marine structures and compares the cost of a cast-in-place deck system (CIPDS) to a CDS. Construction techniques were developed from working with different contractors on several projects to produce a deck system that reduced construction costs through labor savings while providing the structural integrity required for a marine structure. Use of both systems by the same contractor on the same project provided a good comparison of the cost of the 2 systems. Cost savings in forming pile caps and deck slabs compared with the CIPDS cap and deck slabs are illustrated.
