SNITCH LINES AND BLACK BOXES: LET'S TALK
A major issue for the first century of the new millennium is undoubtedly going to be privacy. The development and use of technology for gathering information about people and organizing it has taken some major leaps in recent years. Black boxes will tell the story of how we drive. Traffic cameras will record our traffic law infractions. Road pricing technologies will record where we drive and when and offer the prospect of charging us by the road we drive on and when we drive on it. What is missing is an adequate debate on how we want these technologies used and how they relate to the goals of training and education.
