FOULING AND ECONOMIC SHIP PERFORMANCE
This Paper deals with the causes and definition of hull roughness, and discusses the relation between roughness and drag from laboratory tests and from ship trials based on frigates of the Royal Navy carried out during the 1960s. An analysis of the measured roughness of these ships and the cost of roughness and fouling is made. It is concluded that about 19% of the Navy fuel costs are used up in overcoming the effects of roughness and fouling, and some practical suggestions are made as to how this cost can be effectively reduced.
