THE ECOPOINT DSRC SYSTEM
Ecopoint is a system for controlling transit of heavy vehicles through Austria to reduce negative environmental effects. An upgrade to an automatic system was tendered in 1996, and the contract was awarded to Kapsch in Austria in 1997, with Micro Design ASA as subcontractor for the DSRC parts. The DSRC Ecopoint system commenced operation in Austria on January 1st 1998 with 160 single lanes and 9 multilane stations. The Transport Ministry of Austria is the owner of Ecopoint, but the European Union Transport Directorate (DGVII) influences the system as part of the European transport policies. Some of the requirements from DGVII were that the system should follow the 5.8 GHz DSRC standards, and that the Ecopoint tags should be open for competition for all interested manufacturers in a truly interoperable way. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
