A LINK-NODE DESIGN STANDARD OF A DIGITAL ROAD MAP FOR ADVANCED TRAFFIC INFORMATION SERVICES

The world-wide blossoming of ITS research and navigation technologies has activated some of digital road map standardization efforts for traffic information provision. Many of groups have proposed database content and format standards of it. But none of these standards, however, has enjoyed market acceptance or even market evaluation, since they are not related to commercially available systems. Considering this kind of situation, this paper first reviews the state-of-the-art of digital road map standards for ITS applications and tries to suggest a quasi-standard for collective ATIS applications such as traffic information center (TIC). Therefore, more emphasis has been placed on digital road map database for the traffic information center. Next, a procedure for converting a digital road map produced for exclusively vehicle navigation for a general traffic information center suitable format has been introduced along with the standard development process shown in this paper. The derived format includes a link-node identification scheme and some other attributation process. Problems regarding the conversion process have been identified along with discussion for prospective future improvements. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
