CONSTRUCTION OF ITS IN JAPAN'S MEDIUM-SCALE PREFECTURE (OKAYAMA PREFECTURE)
Okayama Prefecture, one of Japan's moderately urbanized prefectures, is the location of some important road traffic features of the Chugoku region. The Okayama Prefectural Police Headquarters have been, since 1996, promotIng development of facilities under the Seven-Year Plan for Traffic Safety Facilities Improvement. The most critical goal of this project is the construction of a Universal Traffic Management System (UTMS). Currently, a subsystem of UTMS, the Advanced Mobile Information System (AMIS) is scheduled to commence operations in April 1999. This paper introduces (1) construction of wide area road traffic information networks, (2) installation of infrared beacons, and (3) system operation and management support, focusing on AMIS, its challenges, and possible approaches. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
