PAINT SYSTEMS FOR THE MODERN SHIP

The construction and pattern of service use of modern ships dicate the requirements for their paint systems. These requirements are reviewed and current developments aimed at meeting them are described. The basic requirements for underwater, interior and exterior paints are discussed separately and a number of new coating systems undergoing service trials are described. Other sections of the coating research program, not yet progressed to the ship trial stage, are described to illustrate the approaches being pursued and attention is drawn to the difficulties of simultaneously meeting the conflicting requirements of high durability and easy application. With the emphasis on extended life of coatings, the need for realistic and accelerated test methods is becoming increasingly important. The lack of suitable techniques frequently presents difficulties.
