APPLICATION OF IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY TO TRAFFIC CONTROL ON THE HANSHIN EXPRESSWAY

Before and after the start of use of the Itami Tunnel located on the Osaka-Ikeda Line (an extension) of the Hanshin Expressway, a traffic flow monitoring system based on image processing was evaluated using the emergency-use industrial television (ITV) cameras and traffic-flow monitoring ITV cameras installed in the tunnel. This system automatically detects abnormal events in traffic flow, such as stops and slow driving due to accidents or vehicle trouble and the swerving of vehicles to avoid striking an obstruction, by providing image processing to the video sent from the emergency-use ITV cameras and detecting the vehicles. The system also sends the results to the Traffic Control Center and measures various data such as traffic volumes and average vehicle speeds. The traffic-flow measuring ITV cameras installed on the ceiling of the tunnel to minimize any effects of overlapping of the succeeding or following vehicle or the vehicles running on adjacent lanes have been checked for practicability.
