SAFETY EVALUATION OF RAMP METERING IN GLASGOW USING THE ASSET IMAGE PROCESSING SYSTEM

This paper concerns the traffic safety implications of the implementation of ramp metering as part of integrated traffic control and describes the use of the ASSET image processing system, developed at DERA Chertsey, to assess traffic safety on the M8 motorway in Glasgow through an analysis of video footage recorded before and after the introduction of ramp metering. The work was carried out as part of the European Union DGXIII 'TABASCO' (Telematics Applications in BAvaria SCotland and Others) project, which involves demonstrations of telematics applications throughout Europe. Glasgow City Council, the project's co-ordinating partner, in co-operation with The Scottish Office, is actively participating in specific work involving an urban integrated control strategy that harmonises the interaction between the urban road and motorway networks.
