VEHICLE EYE: SONAR SYSTEM FOR NEAR ENVIRONMENT RECOGNITION

Ultrasound sensors are currently used on vehicles as short range obstacle detection devices (low cost and simple). In this paper, a new type of sonar is described: an electronic scanning system based on a phased array of ultrasonic transducers. This system allows to extract useful information from the vehicle environment: distance, angular position, velocity and nature of surrounding obstacles. The 3D wide angle scanned area of this sonar opens new application possibilities at low speed (below 40 km/h) such as automatic parking, guidance in traffic jam and safe manoeuvre. Real car tests have been performed to check the influence of rain, wind, temperature and noise. With an affordable cost, such sonar system can be a good complement to long range radar devices for global safety and driver assistance. Bats performance clearly shows the potentiality of ultrasounds as near environment recognition for vehicles. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
