AN ASSESSMENT OF PRESENT AND FUTURE CARGO HANDLING SYSTEMS

This paper surveys the growth in world seaborne trade of the major bulk commodities, outlines the demand for bulk shipping, and then discusses the economic factors influencing the average size, numbers and types of ship currently available and on order. The cargo-handling technology presently in use on these vessels is assessed and then future requirements and possible new systems are discussed. Specialized bulk carriers are examined with a view to assessing their future potential in the world bulk trades. Four main types of unitized and conventional cargo-handling systems in the general cargo trade are described and the advantages of each are outlined. Some indication is given of the future of all these systems within the maritime transport industry.
