COATINGS FOR SHIPS' TANKS FOR SEA WATER, POTABLE AND DISTILLED WATER

This Paper discusses factors affecting tank coating performance, laboratory trials of heavy duty coatings and past and present practice in the Royal Australian Navy. Shipboard experience and laboratory trials show that the only hope of achieving good performance with heavy duty coatings is to abrasive blast clean to the highest standard before application of the coating system. Laboratory trials have also shown that there are a number of systems now available for the lining of both salt water and distilled water tanks, but equally there are a number of heavy duty linings that do not perform well.
