SURVEY, DESIGN, ESTIMATING AND MANAGEMENT OF HIGHWAYS AND STRUCTURES IN CONJUNCTION WITH ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING

The construction of highways and other structures basically involves the functions of site surveying, designing, drawings and detailing, preparing a standard schedule of rates, estimating, and management. This paper reviews some of the wide range of software packages that assist these functions. For site surveying, the available software includes Quardinate Geometry (QOGO) and Digit Terrain Modelling (DTM). AutoCAD and its modifications have made it much easier and more economical to analyse management functions. They are available for the major operating systems: Windows, PC-DOS/MS-DOS, UNIX, and Macintosh. The following specific packages are described briefly: (1) Autosketch for Windows; (2) Generic CADD; (3) AutoCAD LT for Windows; (4) AutoCAD; (5) AutoCAD-IGES Translator; (6) Aemulus and AemulusLF; (7) Advanced Modelling Extension (AME); (8) AutoCAD Data Extension (ADE); (9) Autovision; (10) AutoCAD Designer; (11) AutoSurf; (12) Autodesk Manufacturing Expert, which combines AutoCAD, AutoSurF with AutoMill, and the IGES Translator; (13) 3D Studio; (14) Animator Pro; and (15) DGBR SSR. Software for estimates is also discussed. As an illustrative example, a typical hardware configuration and the software that it uses are specified.
