ADVANCED TRAVELLER INFORMATION SERVICES VIA DIGITAL AUDIO BROADCASTING: THE CANADIAN EXPERIENCE

Recent innovations in Digital Radio and Advanced Traffic Information technologies will offer Canadians elevated levels of transportation efficiencies, domestic and international business development opportunities, while providing unprecedented levels of active convenience and safety. In the last several years, Transport Canada in cooperation with the provincial transportation ministries in Ontario and Quebec, Enterprise (primarily US state DOT's), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the International Standards Organization (ISO) has sponsored the development of a set of language independent global communication standards known as International Traveler Information Standards (ITIS). This set of standards allows inter-operability between the Traffic Management Centers, Value added Service Providers, Broadcasters and Receivers. This paper documents the successful end to end demonstration of applying ITIS in the transmission and display of real time local digital traffic information via L-Band Digital Audio Broadcasting from the Toronto CN Tower.
