A SURVEY-BASED APPROACH FOR IDENTIFYING INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS OF EXPRESSWAY DRIVERS: KOREAN EXPERIENCE AND INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON

A comprehensive survey for identifying the information requirements of expressway drivers and improving the quality of travel information has been conducted. The surveyed group includes general public driving passenger cars and truck/bus drivers. At the same time, a similar questionnaire with more distribution related inquiries has been asked to collect the opinions of potential (traffic) information service providers. The survey result shows that the most desired types of information are congestion (location and duration), travel time, and alternative route information in that order of preference. Comparisons have been made with those studies by Linda Ng et al. (1995), Zarean (1994), Choi et al. (1996), and Sasamori et al. (1997). With positive confirmation of desired information type out of international comparisons, some improvement schemes of traffic information provision have been proposed along with prospective public - private business model should be investigated.
