TOWARDS A CITY PASS

CALYPSO is a project dedicated to contactless payment and ticketing opened to multimodal, multiservice and multi-operator environment. CALYPSO achieves the merging between transport (contactless pass) and banking (electronic purse) in the continuation of the ICARE European project currently tested in 6 cities in Europe. At these various sites, ICARE has been evaluated through the operational activities of a large number of users (more than 40 000). The developments in CALYPSO are undertaken by the transport and service operators, together with the banks, in 4 diversified European cities: Constance, urban cross-border zone, which will associate a regional transport network and the ZKA electronic purse already used by a majority of German card-holders. Lisbon, medium size capital city, with a complex urban transport network, associated with the oldest electronic purse in Europe, the SIBS "PMB". Paris, major capital city, starting its regional electronic purse together with a complete change of the transport ticketing in the Ile de France region. Venice, small town with a very high tourist activity (Ca. 14 000 000 annual visitors), requiring a strict management of the visitor flows. Those cities will have an operational CALYPSO system within the next 2 years. The Region de Bruxelles is associated to the project. CALYPSO ambitions to be at the basis of an international standard in the co-ordinated management of : payment, ticketing, identification, information and security. Beyond an active presence within all the major standardisation bodies, CALYPSO includes, in its consortium, a global network of user operators : (CLUB: ContactLess Users Board) gathering to date 20 federations of operators representing more than 150 networks and service suppliers. The scope of the project, that impacts directly more than 50 million people in Europe from its initial installations, is unique in the whole world. For the covering abstract see IRRDE102946.
