TO CUSTOMIZE IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT : ATMS TMC SOLUTIONS BASED ON THE USE OF STANDARD PRODUCTS HAVE SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGES OVER CUSTOM-BUILT SOLUTIONS, AT ALL STAGES IN A PROJECT'S LIFE-CYCLE

This article looks at advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) and the advantages of having standard, off-the-shelf products with flexible customization tools and support for open standards. The experience of the computer aided design (CAD) industry is used as an example of the benefit of shifting from proprietary custom solutions to the use of standard products. The author describes some of the benefits of open standards for ATMS, including operation, maintenance and replacement.
