DYNAMIC ANALYSIS AND TESTING OF A MODEL MOTORWAY BRIDGE

The static design and normal mode analysis of a slab bridge, currently under construction for a Scottish new town development corporation, was carried out using the nastran general purpose digital computer program. The bridge deck is skewed and curved in plan, having a mean radius of 90 M, a length of 58.2 M, width 12.3 M and slab thickness 0.8 M. It has a central carriageway of 7.3 M and right and left hand kerbs of 2.5 M. The bridge is supported on flexible mounts at five stations along its length, each support being continuous along the width of the carriageway. The structural idealisation of the deck is shown in addition to the natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained by normal mode analysis. To validate the results of such an analysis experimentally, a 1/50th scale model of the bridge was constructed. Natural frequencies and modes of vibration of the model were determined experimentally and also using nastran. The results are presented and compared in this report. /TRRL/
