THE EFFECTS ON SAFETY, TIME CONSUMPTION AND ENVIRONMENT OF LARGE SCALE USE OF ROUNDABOUTS IN AN URBAN AREA: A CASE STUDY

An experiment with small roundabouts as speed reducing measures was carried out in Sweden. The purpose of the study was to test the large scale and long term effects of the roundabouts. The following traffic safety goals were decided on: 1) the number of casualties should decrease continuously, and by at least 50% in 10 years; 2) the largest reduction should be due to vulnerable road users, in particular children and elderly; 3) the feelings of unsafety caused by traffic should be reduced as well; and, 4) other 'social aspects' should be enhanced. The article discusses the results of the experiment.
