SPECIAL PROJECT LECTURE: MOTORWAY HELSINKI-LAHTI

Upgrading the main road from Jaervenpaeae to Lahti to a motorway is the first privately financed main road project in Finland. The construction project includes a 69 km (42 mi) second carriageway, 88 bridges, etc. The first section was opened to traffic in November 1998, one year before the scheduled time. Detailed planning work was carried out under contractor management. A group of consultants was assembled to work with the project. Particular areas where capacity was required were geotechnical design and ground investigations due to the short planning period, from the conclusion of the contract to beginning of construction (2 months). In particular, all sections needing settlement time had to be constructed during the first summer season. This new construction and financing method has made it possible to work effectively both in construction and in planning. Time and money are saved compared to traditional contracting methods based on annual state budgets and small contracts.
