PLANNING OF A NEW MAJOR HARBOUR FOR HELSINKI
Helsinki's new major harbor is being planned for the Vuosaari district in eastern Helsinki. The present harbor area is becoming too small as port operations grow. Further, the present harbor area represents an obstacle to the construction of housing in an area near the city center. The most fundamental issues in preliminary planning are mass balance, the optimal placement of future structures, the placement of traffic routes, and city-plan based planning. The creation of a three-dimensional terrain model was controlled by a geographic information system founded on a database. The purpose of the three dimensional terrain model was to determine those areas in which additional ground investigations would be necessary and to get an idea of the dredging masses.
