EXTERNAL PLATE REINFORCEMENT FOR CONCRETE BEAMS. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE
A discussion of a technical note with the aforementioned title by N.K. Subedi and P.S. Baglin, published in the journal (Volume 124, Number 12, December 1998), is presented. The discusser suggests that, in order to observe the enhancement in shear strength, only the shear area should be considered. The discusser also questions whether the strengthening effects cause the main longitudinal bars to yield at failure. The discusser points out that the deflections at the load position are similar for the strengthened beams. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
