ATLANTA BRIDGE PROJECT CIRCUMVENTS CLEAN AIR RULING
Although federal funds for highway projects in the Atlanta metropolitan region have been shelved until the city can develop a transportation plan that meets Clean Air Act requirements, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved a brownfield redevelopment effort that includes a major bridge by including the proposal in the agency's Project XL demonstration program. A multiuse urban revitalization development project at the former Atlantic Steel site in downtown Atlanta could have been killed if a 600 ft (183 m) bridge leading to the site had not been approved. The EPA says the project will result in less air pollution than an equivalent amount of development at suburban sites and thus will also reduce urban sprawl. The new bridge, which will handle cars, pedestrians, bicycles, and eventually rail vehicles, would connect the site to Interstate 75/85 and the city's MARTA transit system.
