EAPS HELP TRUCK DRIVERS
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) offer help on a wide variety of concerns in the lives of truck drivers. Employee assistance for workers with substance abuse problems is required by the Department of Transportation (DOT), but some companies now go far beyond the legal minimum. Thus, employees can find help with concerns including personal relationships, family issues, legal problems, work issues, financial difficulties, and addiction. A 1985 study showed that among companies with EAPs in place, there was a 33% decline in the use of sickness benefits, a 65% decline in work-related accidents, and a 30% decline in workers' compensation claims. Despite increasing use of EAPs, there is still considerable resistance to them among for-hire trucking companies.
