WEIGH-IN-MOTION USING OPTICAL FIBRE TECHNOLOGY
A new Weigh In Motion sensor is under development within the Alcatel Group and the Public Works Research Laboratory, depending on the French Ministry of Transport. The sensor principle uses induced photoelastic properties in optical fibres under loading by mechanical strain. Polarimetric fringes are observed. A calculation devoted to the fibre output signal phase gives the force applied to the sensor, in real time. The paper describes the theoretical principle and processing and presents a calibration result. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102667.
