TRAFFIC AND LOADING STRESSES ON URBAN ROADWAYS: COMPARISON WITH OTHER NETWORKS AND NEW TECHNICAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Urban roadways constitute a special field of application characteristic of traffic on the French road network. In the past three years, measurements have been conducted using piezo-ceramic transducers to determine the traffic and the aggressiveness of commercial vehicles on highly diversified urban roadways: streets, boulevards, ring roads, etc. The aggressiveness of heavy traffic in an urban area is far lower than in the case of rural roads and important lessons are to be drawn for technical, economic and environmental optimisation for reconstruction and maintenance of urban roads. The definitions of commercial vehicles and aggressiveness calculation methods are in accordance with French standard NF P 98-082 of January 1994. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102667.
