TEMPORARY WORKS AT NORTH GREENWICH STATION

North Greenwich Station forms part of the Jubilee Line extension in the east end of London, located on the Greenwich peninsula to the south of the river Thames on the site of an old gasworks. The underground station was designed as a reinforced concrete box, 395m long by 32m wide and 25m deep, to be built as a cut and cover type construction. A temporary retaining wall was required to enable the construction to proceed. The construction sequence was adapted to suit the ground conditions and the critical TBM launch by close co-operation within the contractors' joint venture of Sir Robert McAlpine Limited, Wayss & Greytag and Bach Limited, which included construction, tunnelling and geotechnical specialists. The evolution of the design of the temporary works during the tender period and the changes necessary during the construction period to suit the actual site conditions are described. The interaction between the construction requirements of the permanent works and the geotechnical works is reported. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD E102464.
