COVERED WAYS 12 AND 58, KENSINGTON: COST-EFFECTIVE INVESTIGATION OF HISTORIC RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE

Various practical constraints make the site investigation of underground railway structures difficult and costly. A cost-effective approach is required in which essential aspects are identifeid and major issues are resolved as early as possible in the investigative programme. This paper describes the approach adopted for the investigation and analysis of Covered Ways 12 and 58, which are 19th century cut-and-cover railway tunnels on the London Underground at Kensington. It describes the range of logistical and geotechnical problems encountered, which typically apply to many sections of railway infrastructure, and illustrates how a well-focused and flexible investigation in combination with appropriate analyses can provide considerable benefits and cost savings.
