GIANTS' SHOULDERS: THE COST-EFFECTIVE USE OF GEOTECHNICAL DESK STUDIES IN CIVIL AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
All scientific and technological endeavour grows out of and builds upon the efforts of previous workers. Within the civil and structural engineering industries, desk studies are a well-known but often under-used method of gathering and assessing such existing information. This paper has three main objectives. Firstly, it describes the technical context of geotechnical desk study work. Secondly, it provides a checklist of the principal classes of desk study information for construction projects. And thirdly, through the description of two case studies, it illustrates how historical and precedent information obtained by geotechnical desk studies can make particularly cost-effective contributions to the planning and design of construction projects.
