ROAD SAFETY AUDIT: CURRENT ISSUES IN AUSTRALIA

Australian state road authorities have been amongst the leaders in the world in introducing road safety audit. However, the process is still relatively new, and many engineers and managers are still not sure what a safety audit entails. Others still do not know why it is necessary - after all, haven't engineers always designed with safety as a major objective? This paper aims to promote an advanced level of adoption of road safety audit in Australia by all levels of government. It outlines the progress that has been made in road safety audit, and discusses some of the issues which have emerged with the road safety audit process in recent years. The paper details some of the outcomes of the recent National Road Safety Audit Summit held in Adelaide to discuss current road safety audit issues. The case for further training of engineers in road safety audit and general road safety engineering is stressed. The paper concludes by promoting road safety audit as an integral part of a road design process, highlighting the advantages of road safety audits when carried out during the design stages.
