MADYMO MODELLING OF THE TRANSAFE SEAT FOR REDUCING SIDE IMPACT INJURIES IN THE PERENTIE 4X4 TROOP CARRIER
A three-dimensional MADYMO model was developed and validated for simulating Australian army TRANSAFE side facing seats with seated 50th percentile Hybrid III dummies subjected to a mid-severity crash pulse. The TRANSAFE seat is designed to provide better protection to occupants seated side ways in the rear of a Perentie 4x4 troop carrier in the case of a frontal impact crash. The dynamic impact tests of the TRANSAFE seats were simulated to predict the restrained occupant's injury outcomes. The dummy kinematics and injury parameters from the simulation were compared to laboratory impact tests and fairly good agreement was found. The model was later used to design a metal TRANSAFE seat by selecting the best combination among a variation of material properties and seat geometry. This paper describes some of the modelling techniques used to reconstruct the laboratory dynamic side impact tests from the TRANSAFE seating testing program.
