THE LABORATORY SIMULATION OF VEHICLE RESPONSE TO ROAD PROFILE EXCITATION

Acceleration responses of an instrumented vehicle when driven along a test road at constant speed were compared with its corresponding responses to test rig inputs computer synthesised with similar statistical properties to the test road. The inputs were applied to the vehicle tyres by four high response servo-hydraulic actuators. Various techniques were used to compensate the input to the simulator for stationary tyre and tyre enveloping effects. A simple averaging operation on the synthesised road data combined with a reduction in tyre pressures was found to give the best results. /TRRL/
