TRUCKERS ROLE
After several years of unsuccessful efforts in search of a dedicated short range communications (DSRC) standard for electronic tolling in the United States, it looks like the toll operators are now ready to cooperate to reach a compromise. Truck operators are being asked to consider using hybrid transponder technology in their trucks which is compatible with all existing toll readers. The article points out that although truckers are likely to benefit most from interoperable tolling, the transponders used in truck clearance systems could be extended to perform a wide range of additional functions, including toll payment and fleet management.
