COMPACTION CONTROL PF EMBANKMENTS USING THE VARIABLE ENERGY LIGHT DYNAMIC PENETROMETER - PANDA
CONTROLE DE COMPACTAGE DES REMBLAIS A L'AIDE DU PENETROMETRE DYNAMIQUE LEGER A ENERGIE VARIABLE - PANDA
The Panda penetrometer is a portable dynamic penetrometer with variable energy. Its principle consists in striking a set of rods, with the help of a hammer, and driving a cone into the soil; the diameter of the rod is 14 mm (.5 in) and the cone section is 2 or 4 sq cm (--------). For each hammer blow, the impact speed and the driven depth are registered. By using the Dutch formula, it is possible to obtain a penetrogram giving the dynamic cone resistance versus the depth. This apparatus has been tested under many situations and the results obtained have been those obtained by other classical techniques. One of the most important applications with this apparatus is the compaction control of embankments, in particular in places difficult to access or at low depth. This paper presents the control method developed with the help of Panda and the calibration procedure for this application.
