RAILROADS RETHINKING GRINDING PRACTICES
Rail grinding programs have evolved over the years, from corrective maintenance to preventive programs. Currently, the new preventive-gradual approach enables railroads to transition from their existing corrective or maintenance grinding programs to the more efficient and cost effective preventive grinding program. The goal of the preventive grinding approach is to remove only as much metal as is necessary to maintain a healthy rail condition, and ultimately to achieve the optimal wear rate, a state of balance between sufficient and insufficient wear.
