ARIZONA'S STATEWIDE ITS INITIATIVES : STREAMLINING THE ITS ARCHITECTURE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. recently completed the Strategic Plan for Deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems in Rural Arizona (Statewide Strategic Plan). This Plan was the second major rural ITS study undertaken in Arizona. A significant challenge of this project was to develop a statewide ITS architecture that could meet the unique needs identified in this study, as well as integrate with other architectures and systems already in place in Arizona. The study team followed FHWA's Strategic Planning Guidelines for the study, which included an extensive stakeholder outreach and participation program. Needs of the rural transportation system were identified and prioritized through several meetings with the public and project coalitions
