OPERATIONS RESEARCH AND SEMANTIC CONTROL : APPLICATION TO ADVANCED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
In this paper, the authors describe how operations research (OR) and semantic control can be used in a framework for the development of advanced traffic management systems (ATMS). A brief overview is first given, focusing on the scope of problems that can be addressed by OR. The structure of a semantic control system is also studied. The paper then presents an example that illustrates the application artificial neural networks and shortest path algorithms to the problem of estimating traffic volume and allocating traffic to maintain road capacity.
