CONSUMER RESEARCH ON ATIS TECHNOLOGIES : A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CONSUMERS IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA AND THE PARIS REGION

Consumer response to Advanced Traveler Information Systems was investigated in terms of the consumer's willingness to purchase and pay for in-vehicle route guidance devices. The results of the surveys conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Paris region were compared to identify similarities and differences in consumer attitudes between the two regions. The notable difference between the two regions was that more people in the Paris region were interested in purchasing an in-vehicle route guidance device then were the people in the Bay Area. However, a similarity was found in the amount they were willingness to pay for the device with the majority expecting and willing to pay $500. However, the study indicated that the majority of motorists are satisfied with current traffic information services and they are perceived to be useful for intraurban trips
