MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS ON AND ABOVE UPPER DECK RELATED TO STRUCTURAL DESIGN
The study has revealed that even on newer ships there are many structures of undesirable design. The main problems are: 1) Insufficient accessibility for corrosion protection of some parts of the structure itself. 2) Too small clearance between the structure and deck, bulwark or bulkhead to achieve easy access beneath or behind the structure. 3) Too many details made of ordinary steel, which cause rust staining because they cannot be protected properly with paint alone. Such details are clamps, bolts, nuts, hinges, small ventilation ducts on bulkheads etc. 4) Sharp cut edges which prove to be starting points of Rusting. 5) Serious corrosion that seems unavoidable when hot pipes of copper alloys are joined by steel flanges. The study also revealed that proper corrosion protection of steam pipes and winches is very difficult. No ordinary paints will last for long due to the high temperature and better protective methods or means are needed. It was also evident that the low paint standard found in some cases was at least partly due to the low standard of the original treatment as new buildings, or the use of unsuitable paints for the purpose is question.
